Oil India begins gas production from Rajasthan desert field
Oil India Limited commenced gas production from its Bakhritibba Discovered Small Field block in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district on June 1, 2025, marking a significant milestone for the state-owned upstream oil and gas company.
The shares of Oil India Limited were trading at ₹423.60 down by ₹3.20 or 0.75 per cent on the NSE today at 2.35 pm.
The company has achieved initial production of 67,200 standard cubic meters per day (SCMD) of gas from the desert block located in Western Rajasthan’s challenging arid terrain. OIL plans to scale up production to 100 million standard cubic meters per day (MSCMD) from the Bakhritibba block.
The project represents what OIL describes as “fast monetisation” from a Discovered Small Field Phase III block, with the company successfully drilling three multi-well pad wells within the designated development period. The achievement demonstrates the company’s operational capabilities in difficult desert conditions.
Oil India Limited, classified as a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Government of India, is one of the country’s leading upstream oil and gas companies. The company’s registered office is located in Duliajan, Assam.
The Bakhritibba DSF block development underscores India’s ongoing efforts to boost domestic oil and gas production and reduce import dependence. The project’s location in Western Rajasthan’s frontier region highlights the expansion of energy exploration into previously untapped areas of the country.
